Art of Ascension is a free RPG modification for Half-Life 2. Art of Ascension combines the spirit of online role playing games with the faster battling pace of classical first-person shooters. Players increase their character's level and enhance their abilities through the course of playing. In Art of Ascension emphasis is placed on game play, balance, and battling. See the rest of FAQ, or these community-maintained Wikis: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Art_of_Ascension, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_of_Ascension. Note the Wikis are linked here for conveniance, but the accuracy of their content is not guaranteed.
  1. Ensure you have "Half-Life 2: Deathmatch" (which is available from Steam) installed on your machine.
  2. Download the Art of Ascension client, which is available from the Downloads page.
  3. Extract the "aoa" directory from the client zip file to C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods, creating a new C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\aoa directory. (If you installed Steam into a non-standard directory, place "aoa" in the SourceMods directory whereever it is installed.)
  4. Close and reopen the Steam games menus and launch Art of Ascension.

Note, the Art of Ascension server is only available for dedicated public server installs. Since all Art of Ascension servers are part of the same global network, the server cannot be used in LAN-only installs, to ensure fairness to all players. It is still possible to connect to an Art of Ascension server from within a LAN, but it must be possible to connect from the internet as well.

To get the Art of Ascension server, connect to one of the current servers, and issue the aoa_request_server_hosting command in-game. This will send a customized email for your Steam ID, with the files for installation.

No, Art of Ascension is multiplayer only.
This occurs when your client version is not compatible with the server version you are connecting to. Ensure you are running the latest client version from the downloads page.
No, your Art of Ascension character is tied to your Steam account. As long as your Steam account is secure, so is your character. It is not allowed (by either Art of Ascension or Steam) to give out your Steam account, so keep it safe.
No, your Art of Ascension character is for that account only. You can not give away, share or transfer players to another account.
No, you can not recover a player tied to a VAC-banned Steam account.

Each new character begins the game at Level 0, with 0 Experience Points.

Every time you defeat an opponent, your character gains Experience Points. The number of Points gained varies, and will be greater for defeating stronger opponents.

There is also a crowd watching the match at all times, which cheers for the player putting on the best show. You will gain more Experience Points than normal by becoming the crowd favorite (by fragging lots of enemies and avoiding being killed), or by killing the current crowd favorite.

When you gain enough Experience Points, your character gains a Level, which grants 7 Attribute Points and 5 Weapon Points.

The first Level is gained with 200 Experience Points. Each additional Level requires 400 more Experience Points than the last. For reference, the first several levels are listed here, but note there is no maximum level.
